Become a Patroller

The Highlands Ski Patrol has kept guests safe since 1963. We’re a volunteer team of more than 75 patrollers and a proud member patrol of the National Ski Patrol (NSP). Patrollers are the mountain’s first responders: we provide emergency care, transport injured guests by toboggan, help with lift evacuations and keep the slopes safe for everyone.

Who we’re looking for

Strong skiers or snowboarders who are comfortable on all of The Highlands’ terrain in any conditions, stay calm under pressure, and are ready to commit to training. You don’t need a medical background — we’ll train you.

What it takes

Every patroller meets the National Ski Patrol requirements:

  • NSP membership (annual dues)
  • The Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) course, plus an annual refresher
  • ICS-100, a free online FEMA course
  • Professional-rescuer level CPR certification every year
  • Local training in skiing or riding, toboggan handling, lift evacuation and mountain orientation

Timing and commitment

  • Sign up by July. OEC classes run in the fall, before the ski season.
  • Part-time patrollers work 11 shifts a season.
  • Full-time patrollers work 22 shifts a season.

How to get started

  1. Contact our Ski Patrol Director (below) to let us know you’re interested.
  2. Create a free account at nsp.org and join as a candidate.
  3. Enroll in the fall OEC course — sign up by July.
  4. Complete on-hill training and the ski and toboggan evaluation.
  5. Put on the red jacket and join the team.
